Forfar Road Runners aim to have a
variety of races to cater for all abilities throughout the year.
The year starts of on the 1st Sunday in February with
the
Multi Terrain Race, a tough gruelling 1/2 marathon round the town.
The race was founded by Ian Matheson in 2006 after comments from runners
that there was nothing in Forfar between the Clova 1/2 in November and
the 10K in August.
The
Hill Race is usually mid summer
and has been run for three years and is steadily picking up in numbers.
July / August time also is the usual time for
hosting the club Duathlon a three mile run a 13 mile cycle ride
starting from the car park opposite the pylon station on the Old
Brechin Road.
Historically the club also put on the Great Angus
Run also known as the
Forfar 15
which was in March timed to be a good hard race prior to the London
Marathon. Nairn Duguid organised the last one in 2005 watch

The
Forfar 10K is the towns main event in August and
now attracts fields in excess of 250 runners. The race was
originally known as the Maggie Storey 10K but after years of loss making
and a charity who would not underwrite the running costs of the event
which saw
club members vote to sever ties with the charity. 2001 saw David Douglas, Ian Matheson and Ron
Milne step in and sponsor the race and
underwrite the costs. Their efforts combined with Nairn Duguid
since 2002 has seen the race grown steadily.
The
Glen Clova Hotel 1/2 Marathon has a long and
detailed history and the club were fortunate to get the event after Born
To Run commented that they could not put the run on due to spiralling
costs. During 2003 Ian Matheson held talks with the hotel and a
sponsor AB (Albert Bartlett & Sons Airdrie), it was then proposed to the
committee that the club could take on the event and make a success of
it, 248 runners completed the race that year and the club has never
looked back with the race entry limit set at 300 for health and safety
reasons the race is always full to capacity.
The year ends on Boxing Day with the
Plum Pudding Plod, a fun run round
Forfar Loch. After many years of postponement and fears over
safety club president Nairn Duguid proposed that the run be moved to the
paths round the loch. It was a good decision as numbers have risen
dramatically with 2006 seeing a record entry of 226 runners.
During the summer months the club also hosts a series of
6 Mile handicap
races some on Wednesday evenings and some on Sunday mornings as part of
the club championships. These races are open to all not just club
members. Keep an eye on the news page for dates of the next
events.
